Painting in the Age of Antonello da Messina
This lecture on Antonello da Messina will explore the Sicilian painter's unique fusion of Italian and Flemish techniques, with a focus on works housed in Florentine collections. We will begin with his celebrated Triptych of the Doctors of the Church (circa 1475), found in the Uffizi Gallery, where Antonello’s meticulous attention to detail and mastery of oil painting bring lifelike realism to his subject. By examining these panels, we will discuss how Antonello's innovative blending of Northern European and Italian traditions influenced the evolution of portraiture and religious painting in the early Renaissance.
