Sculpture in the Age of Gianlorenzo Bernini
In this lecture we will explore the dynamic genius of one of the Baroque period’s most influential sculptors and architects. We will begin by examining his early work, such as The Rape of Proserpina (1621–22), where Bernini's skill in capturing movement and emotion first emerged. We'll then move to his celebrated David (1623–24), a striking departure from Renaissance calm, conveying intense action and psychological depth. The highlight of the lecture will be his masterpiece, The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa (1647–52), where Bernini merges sculpture, architecture, and light to create an immersive religious experience. His contributions to the design of St. Peter's Basilica, including the Baldacchino and Piazza San Pietro, will also be discussed, illustrating his mastery in both intimate and monumental scales.
