Painting in the Age of Raphael

This lecture on Raphael will explore the elegance and harmony of his work, focusing on key masterpieces located in Florentine collections. We will begin with Madonna of the Goldfinch (1505-1506), housed in the Uffizi Gallery, where Raphael’s graceful composition and use of soft, luminous color exemplify his mastery in depicting serene religious subjects. Another focal point will be Portrait of Maddalena Doni (1506), also in the Uffizi, showcasing Raphael’s skill in portraiture through his attention to detail and psychological nuance. We will further examine The Vision of Ezekiel (circa 1518), a dramatic yet balanced composition that illustrates Raphael’s mature style. Through these works, we will discuss how Raphael’s artistic vision evolved during his time in Florence, contributing to his status as one of the most celebrated figures of the High Renaissance.
