Painting in the Age of Titian
This lecture on Titian will explore the Venetian master’s profound influence on Renaissance painting, focusing on key works housed in Florentine collections. We will examine Venus of Urbino (1538), located in the Uffizi Gallery, where Titian’s mastery of color and sensuality redefined the depiction of the female nude. The lecture will also discuss Flora (circa 1515-1520), another Uffizi treasure, celebrated for its radiant use of light and texture to convey delicate beauty and grace. Additionally, we will explore La Bella (1536), a portrait that exemplifies Titian’s ability to combine psychological depth with opulent surface detail. These works will serve as a gateway to understanding Titian’s revolutionary use of color, his innovative compositions, and his lasting impact on the development of portraiture and mythological painting.
