The Annunciation in Tuscan Art

The theme of the Annunciation by the Angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary had especial importance in Tuscany, where the civic year began on 25 March.

 

Mark Roberts investigates the iconography of the Annunciation, a theme that had especial importance in Tuscany, where the civic year began on 25 March. Examples include paintings by Duccio, Giotto, Simone Martini, Fra Angelico, Piero della Francesca, Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael, and sculptures by Ghiberti and Donatello. The theme is also explored in literature and in popular culture.
