Giuseppe Zocchi
This lecture will introduce the legacy of Italian Rococo painter and printmaker Giuseppe Zocchi (1711–1767), best known for his panoramic views of Florence during the 18th century. Zocchi was highly influenced by the grandeur of the city and its architectural beauty, and in his most famous works, such as his engravings of Florence's landscapes and vistas, Zocchi captured the city from elevated perspectives, highlighting its intricate streets, iconic bridges, and stunning palaces. His works often reflect a fascination with the harmonious relationship between nature and urban development, showcasing Florence as a symbol of both classical heritage and contemporary sophistication. In this lecture, we will explore Zocchi’s artistic evolution, focusing on how his depictions of Florence were not merely topographical but also reflected a deeper cultural pride, portraying the city as a living, thriving symbol of enlightenment and artistic achievement.
